ŠKODA JS signs memorandum of cooperation with Rolls-Royce SMR on small modular reactors (SMR)

“In the future, we would like to supply a wide range of components for the primary circuit of SMRs for Rolls-Royce SMR — not only for Czech projects but also on a global scale,”
emphasized František Krček, CEO of ŠKODA JS a.s., highlighting the importance of the partnership formalized by the memorandum.

The Plzeň-based company has already begun gradually investing in its machinery, carrying out preparatory work, and qualifying manufacturing processes related specifically to SMRs. The two signatories have also established a joint working group of experts from both companies who regularly discuss their shared project.

“The memorandum between ŠKODA JS, part of the ČEZ Group, and the British Rolls-Royce SMR is a significant step in preparing the first Czech small modular reactor. From the very beginning, we have said that involving Czech industry in the development and construction of new nuclear sources is our priority, and the cooperation between this traditional Plzeň-based company and the British SMR developer is proof of that,” said Silvana Jirotková, Director of SMR Development at ČEZ.

“We are ready, and we also have significant support from our owner (ČEZ), to invest substantial additional resources into the development of the SMR sector. Besides our manufacturing capacities, we also want to involve our engineering expertise in this project,” added F. Krček.

In the past, ŠKODA JS manufactured and delivered 21 complete nuclear reactors with power and dimensions similar to SMRs (note: VVER 440). Currently, in its production of containers (casks) for spent nuclear fuel from power plants, the company also extensively applies technologies and procedures required, for example, in the production of reactor pressure vessels.
